ABOUT US

In September 2019, a group of dedicated Xavier students started a club called FX Model Parliament. Our club started off small, but gradually grew over time, hosting dozens of students for meetings, guest speakers and debates. We entertained several MPPs - such as Marit Stiles and Kinga Surma - and we even met Premier Doug Ford during our 2020 trip to Queen’s Park. Though many teams and clubs

were sidelined due to COVID-19, we remained strong, holding weekly virtual meetings and debates. We are not a club, we are a community.

How We Started

WHAT WE DO?

The FXMP is no ordinary debate club. We focus strictly on political science, specifically Ontario Provincial, Canadian Federal and US Federal Politics. As opposed to discussing random topics, we discuss current events and local/world issues. When we meet, we have different debating scenarios to keep the members attentive and motivated.

First of all, we propose, edit and debate bills. During these Bill Writing sessions, we split into political parties and write bills, attempting to pass ours or improve the other party’s. The second meeting type is a debate meeting. During these debates, we go over current events and debate pressing issues, anything from education to conflicts. One of the best parts of the FXMP is that you don’t need to know much about politics, since we are all here to learn and to express our opinions, but most of all to have fun! This is not a course, this is a club! You are not expected to do homework or take tests, you just have to participate and share your opinion!

What We Do

ADAPTING TO THE PANDEMIC

We have put in lots of effort into being fully independent from in person meetings. We can now hold regular meetings, debates, and bring in guest speakers, fully through online mediums. This way, the club can run at full speed, while still maintaining social distancing.
